Job Title: Summer Day Camp Unit Head

Job Overview:
Summary: A Camp Settoga Unit Head is responsible for the management and care of a specific age group of campers for the duration of a summer season. They are the point person for counselors and group leaders, camp leadership, specialists and camp families in their age group. This typically includes managing daily schedules, holding staff meetings, addressing camper concerns, and coordinating with other camp staff to maintain safety and smooth operations. A Camp Unit Head has camp spirit, a sense of humor, is organized and has excellent communication skills.
Responsibilities:
Pre-Camp:
- Attend Settoga leadership meetings to prepare for the summer. (approximately 4)
- Read camper profiles and create camp groups.
In season:
Supervise counselors: This includes meeting with them regularly, writing and reviewing staff evaluations, training, and assisting in any situations that arise over the summer. It involves relationship building, being a good role model, and modeling positive interactions between children and adults.
Communicate with Camp Families: This includes responding to parent questions and concerns within 24 hours via email and over the phone. It also includes reaching out to families as situations arise, so they are well informed and as part of the weekly relationship building, we strive for with each of our camp families.
Be responsible for Campers: This includes assisting with swim, lunch, and all times when your Unit is together. It also includes communicating with families and counselors to ensure safety and positive outcomes for each Settoga child. We do this by making campers feel loved and important. Campers are the most important part of the job.
Act as part of the Leadership Team: The leadership team at Camp Settoga includes unit heads, program directors, and members of the camper care team, which is focused on the mental health and wellness of our campers. As a Unit Head, you will have to work closely with other members of the Leadership Team to ensure positive outcomes for campers and families.
Be respectful of our Jewish Community: You don't have to be Jewish to work at Camp Settoga, but you do need to embody our core values of welcoming all people and treating them kindly. You will participate in weekly Shabbat celebrations, learn some of our Hebrew words and phrases, and embrace Jewish cultural activities, some of which will be connected to Israel.
Administrative duties are as follows: Weekly newsletters, TAG day, emails to families about upcoming Unit-specific events like late nights, end of summer camper notes to families (camper portraits), and using CampDoc, our online registration system, to track notes.
Qualifications
- 21+ years of age
- Has a BA. Classroom teaching or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience communicating with families
Physical Aspects of the Position:
- Ability to communicate and work with the assigned age group of campers participating and provide necessary daily instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the camp.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to constantly supervise campers.
Some physical requirements of a unit head specialist could be endurance, including standing, some bending, and stretching. Requirement for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to make projects and assist campers. Requires range of hearing and eyesight necessary to maintain a safe camp environment and carefully observe camper and staff day-to-day experiences.
