Camp Settoga is looking for enthusiastic aquatics staff who have a desire to share a love of swimming + safety with children for the 2025 summer day camp season. We have lifeguard, swim instructor, and hybrid (lifeguard + swim instructor) positions available. Camp runs from June 22nd to August 15th

The swim program at Camp Settoga is an extension of the Aquatics Department at The Marlene Meyerson Jewish Community Center in Manhattan. Located in Pomona, NY, Camp Settoga serves over 300 campers and staff during the summer. All campers receive both swim instruction and free swim daily. Swim levels range from absolute beginners to advanced for children ages 4-13.

All aquatics staff must maintain a current American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard certificate regardless of position, as well as ARC CPR/AED for the professional rescuer for the entirety of camp (or equivalent certification; see below for links). For instructors, a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate is preferred, and previous experience leading classes is preferred. Training is provided.

Swim Instructor Responsibilities:

  • Provide a positive, supportive learning environment for both campers and counselors, fostering a love for swimming and ensuring that all swimmers feel safe and supported in the water.
  • Engage with students, assess their abilities, and develop lesson plans that best cater to both the group and individual needs.
  • Prepare and teach 30-minute swim lessons to children ranging in age and ability daily.
  • Work as a team with fellow instructors, lifeguards, and camp staff to facilitate a safe and welcoming learning environment.
  • Report to the aquatics director when swimmers are ready to advance to the next swim level from beginner to intermediate, or to try deep water (advanced) swim testing.

Lifeguarding Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality lifeguarding services to ensure the safety and well-being of campers, staff, and visitors. Act swiftly and appropriately, providing immediate assistance to swimmers during emergencies and follow lifeguard rotation protocol.
  • Routinely inspect and maintain pool safety equipment, and ensure first aid kit remains stocked.
  • Monitor chemical levels in both pools, conducting hourly checks and notifying the Aquatics Director promptly if any levels are irregular while logging all readings accurately.

All Aquatics Staff Responsibilities:

  • Enforce rules and water safety procedures, while interacting with campers, counselors, staff, and visitors in a friendly and professional manner (adhere to zero tolerance policy for electronic devices during duty hours while swimmers are present in the pool)
  • Execute tasks outlined in the Daily Aquatics Checklist, including maintaining chemical readings, tidying the pool deck, cleaning skimmer baskets, and more.
  • Follow the established code of conduct, adhere to dress code regulations, participate in regular in-service training, and lifeguard drills. Be familiar with Camp's Emergency Action Plan and your role in it.

Qualifications:

  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard training (or certification that meets Level II a Pool Only requirements), and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the professional rescuer (or other accepted course)
  • Quick decision-making and problem-solving abilities during emergencies
  • Regular availability Monday - Friday June 22nd - August 15th, 2025 between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm
    • Specific hours and shifts will vary and be discussed during the interview and onboarding process.
    • Opportunities for extra hours (camp late nights, and Settoga Sundays) will be available over the course of the summer
  • Ability to maintain a positive and energetic attitude and contribute to a positive team culture
  • Minimum age of 17 years old (limited positions available for 16 year olds)

Pay:

  • Lifeguards $16.50-$18.50/hr
  • Swim Instructors $25 - $35/hr
