Job Title: Program Specialist: Sports Coach

Classification: Exempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: The position reports to the Athletic Director who reports to the Assistant Director of Camps.

Position Purpose:

To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of field and court sports activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers' age and abilities. Assist in the management of the physical operation of the field and court equipment and facilities.

Essential Job Functions:

    • Develop and deliver a field sports program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers

  • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
  • Evaluate the abilities of campers to ensure they are progressing throughout the summer.
  • Deliver progressive field and court sports activities.You will be responsible for leading activities such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, flag football, pickleball, etc.
  • Evaluate the success of the field and court sports program.

    • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.

  • Participate in the implementation of staff training for field and court sports.
  • Work with other coaches to support their responsibilities when at field and court sports.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.

    • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the field and court sports program area

  • Maintain the field and court sports equipment including balls, bats, nets etc. Specific sports equipment that you may be responsible for are such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, flag football, pickleball, etc.
  • Ensure the security of the field and court sports equipment when not in use.
  • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair with the Athletic Director.
  • Clean field and court sports equipment on a set schedule.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Assist in the planning of any special events.
  • Maintain equipment lists
  • Support all camp activities
  • Bus responsibilities: lead bus counselor or bus counselor to help facilitate safety on the bus


Sports coaches work alongside other coaches to facilitate periods such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, etc. Sports coaches will report the Athletic Director and train alongside them.

Equipment used: Coordinate with the Athletic Director to identify where/how equipment is stored and work to keep equipment clean and organized through the summer. Equipment could be sports supplies such as basketballs, pickleball equipment, baseballs and bats, soccer balls, etc.

Qualifications: (Minimum qualifications and experience)

  • Documented experience in field and court sports instruction or documented training and experience in the variety of sports the camp offers.
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Training and experience in teaching field and court sports to children.
  • Experience in setting up, securing, and maintaining field and court sports equipment.
  • Knowledge of sports medicine or athletic training is desirable.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Some physical requirements of a field and court sports position could be endurance including standing, running, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and demonstrate sports activities. Requires average range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/program.

Salary Range: $3,000- $3,400
